Celebrating 10 Years
A message from Karis Stander
Investment20/20 was founded 10 years ago by senior industry leaders, with the purpose to drive a forward looking, responsible and inclusive investment industry, where every firm attracts, develops and retains talented people from all backgrounds. A solution designed and led by our industry, Investment20/20 now has over 60 member firms and together we have supported over 2,500 young people to start their professional careers. It gives me great pleasure to share with you a few highlights, as well as some of our alumni and newest trainees who are changing the face of investment management.
Culture, diversity and inclusion (D&I) play a critical role in enabling sector transformation, alongside positioning the industry as one which has relevance to wider society. To engage our future workforce and investors, the sector must remain relevant to those generations whose career and financial decisions are driven by a different set of expectations and values. In addition to this, regulatory expectations on how firms move the dial on D&I have increased as seen by the FCA and PRA’s recent consultation papers on measures to boost inclusion in financial services. If implemented, this will be among the most significant actions taken by an industry regulator to advance D&I in the sector.
While progress has undoubtedly been made across the industry to widen our talent and future investor pool, there is still much work that is needed to ensure a sustainable pipeline of diverse talent, across all business areas and levels of seniority.
Investment20/20 remains an important solution, offering scale and efficiency in how our industry builds connections, trust and relevance with people from across society. Our sector wide approach enables access to a large network of investment management companies and allows members to reach deeper into communities that otherwise may not have considered joining our industry.
I’d like to thank our members for their support over the last ten years, and for their genuine collaboration for the benefit of the wider industry.
We look forward to marking our anniversary by opening the London Stock Exchange on 8 November and are excited to continue to drive forward change over the next 10 years.
Jane Ivinson, Investment20/20 Chair, Deputy General Counsel and Chief Legal Officer, Bank of New York Mellon Investment Management
Investment20/20 is an extraordinary journey for so many – for those of us who work in the investment management industry and those who join us as Investment20/20 Trainees to enrich what we do.
As investment managers we are here to enable our clients to fulfil the financial goals they have set themselves. We can only do that effectively if we can properly understand all the component parts that comprise the market in which we operate, because it is that marketplace which determines the price – or value - of the assets we hold for our clients.
To understand that market, we need to bring to bear the diversity of views that comprise the marketplace in which we are operating. We cannot represent simply a segment of the market and its views because to do that we will be blind to both opportunities and challenges that we need to navigate on behalf of our clients.
At Investment20/20 we have shown that we can bring into the industry those who would not otherwise easily join us – and with them, they bring perspectives and insights that we would not otherwise understand and incorporate into our work.
And importantly, in doing so, we share more broadly with the society in which we operate, an awareness of what we do, and its critical contribution to driving financial literacy and outcomes for our investor clients.
